The Ishihara colour plates are used to detect colour blindness.

Around 8-9% of men and 0.5-0.8% of women in Western countries are affected by red-green colour vision deficiency.

This vision deficiency is not usually immediately apparent in everyday life, and those affected by it are sometimes first confronted with it when they see the Ishihara plates.
